内容が易しく、とても聞き取りやすかった。しかしcensusなど、耳慣れない単語に出会うとやはり思考が滞ってしまう。ところで、本文中のAfrican-AmericanはハイフンでつながれているのにどうしてAsian Americanの方はハイフンでつながっていないのだろうか、少し疑問に感じ調べてみた。
はじめにhyphenatedで少し調べてみると"hyphenated American"という、やや差別的な表現が存在したらしいことがわかった。

現在このつかわれ方がすることはないだろうが、知っておいても別に損はないだろう。hyphenated Americanという言葉があることを手掛かりに、さらに調べてみるとそれらしい記述が見つかった:

つまり複合された語が名詞的に用いられるときにはnon-hyphenatedだが、形容詞的に用いられるときにはhyphenatedだとある。
そこで今回の例を見てみると…

別にこのルールに従っているわけではなさそうで、いっそう混乱してしまうのでした。ちゃんちゃん。
